Current exhibition: Woman And Their Head-dress

Featuring some of the finest artists in KZN and beyond.
View the exhibition from 11 December 2025 until early February 2026.

The covering of a woman's head in one form or another has always had huge cultural and sometimes political significance. The exhibition will explore all these and more options.

For centuries, what women place on their heads has ignited debate, fascination and interpretation. In this exhibition head coverings transcend fashion. They reveal complex narratives of power, protection and self expression. They also become vessels of identity and resistance.

Beth Rautenbach’s ”Strand Looper” stuns with only driftwood on her head, transforming raw nature into regal ornament. In contrast, Wilson Ngobhozi’s “Crowning Glory” radiates cultural vibrancy through a Ndebele woman, a Metro woman, and a married Indian woman.

Many other coverings expose cultural, historical, political and spiritual forces woven into women’s attire. Artists from particularly Natal-Mgababa to Port Edward and as far as Cape Town have unleashed their most daring work for this bold exhibition.
